Cape Buccaneers Rugby Club

Oldies, but hangin' in there.

BUCCS AGM 2011

Minutes of 45th A.G.M. of Cape Buccaneers Sports & Social Club held at  Hamilton S. P. R. F. C. March 31st 2011 at 7-30pm

Present : Chairman and 5 Committee and 4 members.

Apologies: John Hunter, Ken Long, George Dore & James Boschell.

1.   Chairman Welcome

The Chairman welcomed all present and suggested a minutes silence for Bruce                               ‘’Judge’’ Little who passed away earlier this year, after a long struggle and Harry   McConnel a member from many years ago.

2.   2010 A.G.M. Minutes

These minutes were circulated and as no objections were received they were

proposed by the Chairman and seconded by Peter Blakey.

3.  Chairman Report

M.D. remarked that although 2010 had been a somewhat  inactive year with no

Christmas Dinner or Golf Day there was nevertheless the usual but regretfully last

Buccs table for the 2 Oceans marathon which was relatively well attended, all things

     considered.

Although numbers of participants were on the low side there was nevertheless a

happy turn out for the golf weekend in Langebaan where the weather was

brilliant as was Geoff Love who has now won the competition two years on the

     trot.

The darts competition held in December last, at Mark Dawson’s pub and Grill was

won by Kevin Griffin beating the previous years winner Martin Beach and was a

well supported day co-inciding as it did with one of the Springbok Saturday Tour

     matches in the U.K.

It has also been a year for Buccs from yesteryear making a return to Cape

Town with Billy Kennedy and Trevor Kenny and Dawn paying welcome

     visits.

4.  Treasurers Report.

D.W. noted that although the initial indicators were that there were no sponsors of

our table for the 2010 2 Oceans Marathon a sponsorship of R5,000.00 from Pam

Golding was obtained of which R2,500.00 was due to the Buccs. This money

however has still not been received from the 2 Oceans Committee. Chris Prentice

was incensed enough to offer to chase this up with Farouk Meyer! Look out Farouk!

Nevertheless indications are that we will receive these funds shortly.

D,W. reported that there were minimal expenses of R1112.00 in the year with.

Income due (but not received) of R2500 i.r.o. 2010 2 Oceans Marathon.

Our investment with the Sanlam Value Fund Unit Trust Fund is worth R12,227.00

as at 25/03/2011. With R2,211.00 in the bank account current assets amount to

    R14,438.00.

(NEWSFLASH  - It can now be confirmed that the amount of R2,850.00 including Vat, has been received from Race Organisers, nogal! ).

5. Office Bearers

All current office bearers are prepared to stand and as there were no other nominees or objections all office holders were duly elected. The committee is:-

Chairman –                 Mark Dawson

     Vice Chairman –         Mally Brooke

     Treasurer -                  Dion Watson

Sports & Social Sec – Doug Ransome

     Secretary –                  David Morgan

     Roger Young remains President.

Dave Gregory as ad-hoc member for I.T. & Web Maintenance

6. 2 Oceans

M.D. commented that it is probably common knowledge by now that 2010

was the Buccaneers last appearance at manning their own watering table

    for this event.

Records / Memories have it that the Buccs first table appeared in 1984

outside the Hout Bay nursery opposite Roger Young’s then home. Although

a great deal of entertainment has been provided to those behind the table

and to the runners the ravages of time have seen the number of helpers

dwindle to just a handful. Obtaining sponsors has also proved extremely difficult.

Thanks go to Steve Jenkins who ‘’ran’’ (pun intended) / organized the

tables for most of the 28 years. Unfortunately Steve was strangely absent from the

    A.G.M?.

7. Web Maintenance

D.G. reported that it is now necessary to clear off old material - old photographs mainly - from the Website as it is reaching full capacity. Generally he manages to maintain a clear site but is always willing to consider new material / inserts.

8. Golf Tour

M.D. commented that although the early year tour is popular in future all         interested parties need to pay a deposit to avoid a repetition of this years tour where individuals indicated they are willing to tour and then drop out at the last moment. Martin Beach you have been warned!

As this increases the cost for the remaining golfers this requirement received general support from all attendees. No deposit, no tour!

On another tact M.D. made the point that there always seems to be other individuals, often overseas visitors, who would like to join the tour but where the dates aren’t convenient and that we should try and accommodate them by booking and confirming the tour a lot sooner.

M.D. further made the point that the ‘Buccaneers’ name has brand value and that in making up Buccs shirts and other items i.r.o. Golf it is not usually difficult to find buyers.

The golf tour therefore could and should be promoted more vigorously e.g.  via website for offshore visitors, not just locals, and earlier.

Suggestions were that dates be left off clothing items and more than one article produced but with the care to avoid overproduction.

Overall cost of a tour should be kept in the region of R2,000.00 including a shirt and that such a tour be considered a money raising exercise.

9. Any Other Business

Lunch Time Sports Meeting  - Ted Thornberry?

i)      Although Ted Thornberry’s original suggestion Ted was unwilling to follow

through. Doug Ransome, as Social Secretary, offered to run with the idea of a

‘’Lunch Time Club” and suggested the first one in 4-6 weeks time. Over to the

    S.S!

ii)    Christmas Dinner

Regretfully selective memory loss put paid to this event for both 2009 & 2010 even

though many past occasions have been fun times. Metropolitan Golf Club is now

back in circulation as a possible venue. Any other suggestions.?

 iii)  Future Darts Venue

Mark Dawson’s ‘pub & grill’ is now considered the darts venue ‘de rigueur’. Probably

also on a Saturday to co-incide with a rugby game.

iv)  Hammies Subs – for Buccaneers?

These remain as they are – R400.00 p.a. for social members. As for playing

Members ?? Every member to pay directly to Hammies.
