Minutes of 42nd A.G.M. of the Cape Buccaneers Sports &
Social Club held at Hamilton S. P. R. F. C. March 5th , 2008
at 7-00pm for 7.30pm.
Present : The Chairman committee and 9 members.
Apologies : Neal Douglass, Terry Bevan, Tim Butler,
Jon Buxton, Jules Staddon,
& Chris Crowley
1. Chairman Welcome
The Chairman welcomed all present and in particular Dave Layfield and
Bob Stewart.
A minutes silence was held in memory of Jack Chandler.
Chairman and members also to sent their best wishes to Ray Woodman
and Mike Flack, both recently hospitalized, and hope for a speedy recovery.
2. Minutes of 2007 A.G.M.
The minutes of the previous A.G.M were distributed and read and as no
objections received, were accepted.
3. The Chairman’s Report.
The chairman remarked that his happier demeanor was based on the fact that the
year as a whole had been more fruitful and enjoyable for numerous reasons.
There was generally more communication and comment and an effective
dissemination of information both locally and globally and for this we can
thank the evolution of the Bucc’s website which has truly been a revelation.
For this we offer a Big thank you to Martin (Swannie) our informal web-site
manager for keeping us all primed.
It is no co-incidence that we enjoy a greater level of camaraderie, experienced by
both local and overseas Bucc’s.
Two Oceans of course was yet another enjoyable day capably organized by
Steve Jenks and, behind the scenes, the chairman himself, responsible for
‘’drugs’’, drink & rock and roll – sorry – beer, hot dogs and sponsorship.
The Xmas Dinner was a great night and well supported – not for profit and just for
fun. Well done
The Malcolm Prosser Memorial Game was a sad note in the year, all the more
so far the passing of Bob Wilkinson in December 2006 and Jack Chandler, the
day before the game.
The game itself was played in great spirit and zest followed by a hearty
social in the club.
On the theme of memorable rugby the chairman could not restrain himself
from commenting that, despite the atrocious opening game,
a ‘’ good ‘’ world cup, all things considered. He could be right ?!
Our Social Sec excelled himself by organizing a Skittles night in early February,
this year ( a first for the Bucc’s ?) and won by the Greg Cooper duo.
The last weekend of February saw the annual golf tour flourish on the
West coast and by all accounts was one of the best ever – see separate report
from our golf correspondent.
Finally the Chairman made the point that Wednesday is still the Bucc’s night,
only the venue might have changed – alternates between Hammies and the
Firemans Arms.
Further attractions in 2008 are dealt with separately.
4. Treasurers Report.
The treasurer provided a financial statement indicating a net income for the
year of R1487, after expenses of R5313.00 most of which related to the Xmas
Dinner. Current assets amount to R11,654 including the unit trust investment.
There are no Liabilities.
As usual most of the income came from our 2 Oceans sponsor, amounting
to R5000.
The only question from the floor revolved around the use of the cash collected
on the night of the Xmas Dinner as it was not reflected in the income statement.
The Treasurer explained that the Income Statement only reflected what
went through the bank account for the year. The cash in question was used to
pay the caterer directly, on the night. The balance of his cost was settled by
cheque.
Comment was also made to the effect that the Bucc’s will close the existing
cheque account with Standard Bank as it is not worth maintaining simply to
pay bank charges, currently R720.00 p.a. !
More to follow re replacement account.
The accounts were proposed by Greg Cooper and seconded by Kevin Griffin.
Proposed Seconded
Chairman
Vice Chairman Mally Brookes P.Blakey C.Prentice
Treasurer Dion Watson G.Cooper K.Griffin
Sports & Social Secretary Doug Ranson C.Prentice G.Cooper
Secretary David Morgan C.Prentice K.Griffin
7. Forthcoming Events
Two Oceans – 22nd March 2008 – another R5000.00 guaranteed – Braai, drinks
and rock ‘n roll to follow.
A ‘’heart’’ felt plea from the Chairman to let us know who will be along to help on
the day as we need as many bodies as possible. Let Swannie know for web site
purposes.
A night the races – sometime in May with a minimum of 100, preferably 200 –
Details to follow.
Mid Year Xmas Dinner – Venue to be decided. Food cost is always a factor.
To be decided at next meeting.
July 9th Medics Tour – As this touring side will be far too slow and fragile to face
the Bucc’s we will let them of the hook by sub – contracting out the game to the Hammies U20 side.
Malcolm Prosser Memorial Game – To be played the week before or after the Medics game. Our gallant Chairman has it all under control.
Lions Tour - 2009 – Now the excitement is mounting !
Ken Tweedie can obtain 30 – 50 tickets only as part of a tour. Is producing an
itinerary and will be summarized on the website.
We are looking at ± R15 – R20,000.00 but in the meantime understand there is a
very big interest from overseas.
Proposed Darts Game – M Brookes took on the mighty task of organizing a Bucc’s challenge for Hammies Old & Bold team and maybe against Old Mutual.?!
8. Any Other Business
The secretary explained the replacement bank account will be, effectively a
money market unit trust fund with banking facilities attached to it. Whilst it is not
ideal it will, currently, earn interest of approx 10.5% p.a. with a flat monthly fee of
R25.00
Other charges are nominal and, as when the Bucc’s need to make a payment, this
can be done on the strength of a written instruction.
There are three signatories to the account - Chairman, Treasurer and Secretary.
For those wishing to provide information, commentary, jokes, photographs the
Bucc’s web site address is www.capebuccaneers.com
9. Conclusion – 8.30 p.m.
