Cape Buccaneers 8 Kelvin Grove 2
On Sunday 1st June 2008 the Buccaneers played against Kelvin at Hamiltons. It was an evenly contested game till well into the second half with the teams changing sides with the Buccs leading by 2 tries to 1 and only asserting themselves in the last 10 minutes.
It was typical Sunday rugby although surprisingly a free flowing and entertaining game . This due mostly to Old Man Swanepoel from Kelvin who reffed the game in his usual unbiased manner (he wore a replica Kelvin jersey!!!) but it was this that contributed to the free flowing of the game!
Upfront, strong men Garth and Ed Caldwell had the better of the opposition props (only because we played uncontested scrums!) In the lineouts it was the flailing arms of Julian Staddon which caught the eye ...no contact with the ball but definitely causing confusion for both teams! On the wing Garth Roberts with gittery hands at first was heading for the Sammy Suregrip award before redeeming himself with 2 excellent tries.
Moira Mahon in a fashionable black T Shirt managed to talk her opposite number into submission before the coach called on big hitter Garry Owen to replace her as the impact player ! Roland Buillas added a welcome breath of French flair to the backline whilst Bruce Little added his own sort of flair to the forwards !
Anton Moolman had a storming game at centre and helped himself to 2 tries.
Man of the match : Roland Buillas
Runner Up : Ed Caldwell
Sammy Suregrip : Sharkey

The Cape Buccaneers avenged there defeat against the Old Crocks scoring a 3 points to 1 victory in a close contest at Hamiltons.
The "A" team of Martin Beech, Mark Dawson, Kevin Griffin, Dion Watson, Mally Brook and Julian Staddon with Dave Morgan in reserve were too strong for there opponents notwithstanding the underhand tactics employed by the Old Crocks in trying to get the Buccaneers pissed before the game !
With the contest between these two teams now at one-all it is inevitable that a decider will have to be played in the near future.
A big thank you to Mike and Charlotte the publicans, who were very hospitable , providing free snacks for the evening !
Thursday 27th March 2008
The Cape Buccaneers scored a resounding 9- 4 victory over a Provincial strength Old Mutual team in a darts match played at the Old Mutual Sports Club. This was achieved even though our ace darts player and number three seed in the Buccaneers, Kevin Griffin, had to cancel at the last minute due to an attack of gout. When he called he was on his way to the pub to drink the problem away!
The match started off evenly in the team game with both sides taking a game apiece. At this stage their blind player was throwing pretty well and hitting the board on occasions.
In the triples our awesome threesome of Chris Crowley, Dion Watson and Greg Cooper toyed with the opposition letting their all girl opposition level the score before a misthrow by Greg in the last game landed in the right double and secured a 2-1 victory
The doubles proved a bit one sided as the experienced Dave Morgan and Swannie, took on the Old Mutual No.1 and No.2 players and showed them a clean pair of heels with 2-0 win.
All that was left was the singles and at this stage our confidence was up as we had our No 1 and 2 seeded players, Mark Dawson and Martin Beech to play against their number 6 and 7 players. Martin did well against their blind player winning easily 3-0, Mark however struggled against his female opposition going down 2-1.
Confidence in the team is high at the moment and all are awaiting the comeback of Kevin Griffin in the revenge game against the Old Crocks on Wednesday 2nd April 2008 at Hammies.
The Buccaneers water hole was once again a great success this year and thanks go to the dwindling number of Buccs who turned up again this year to support the runners. The Hout Bay boys Greg Clark and Brian Loft were there early having been awakened early by the music at our site. Bob Stewart made his first appearence and the usual crew of Dave Morgan, Chris Prentice, Mark Dawson and Peter Blakey and there families boosted the Buccs contingent.
Cape Buccaneers Golf Tour to Langebaan and Milnerton
The tour went off very well, in fact some commented it was one of the best ever, this was due to the venue and playing both Friday and Saturday at the same course.
The Tour started off ominously on the Friday morning with only Jenks being late. The first day was won by Jenks followed by Mark Dawson, Biggles and Mick. The evening was a fairly quiet affair in the Cactus bar. You know when the Bucc's are getting old when comments were heard before
The second day was a one-sided affair with Biggles winning by some five points and finishing on a tour record of 39 points. He did make the comment "It's all about taking part not winning" but was seen punching the air with every point gained and had flies stuck to his teeth from the endless grin. Biggles won the day with Jenks 2 followed by Mick.
The after game festivities were a touch more colourful... true to Bucc's form of the past. A Braai was planned thanks to the money John Hulse left in the kitty, It was decided to watch the rugby so before the rugby at 3.00pm the organisers of the Braai which included Kevin Griffin (nuf said), went for salads and bread. After some liquid intake at Pearly's we arrived back at 7:00pm. Biggles proceeded to volunteer to round up the rest of the troops at the clubhouse and was not seen again for some time. The Braai went very well, a big thanks to Kevin and Craig.
The intention was to knobble Biggles as he had a 6 point lead going into the last day, however we should have known, he managed perfectly by himself. Seen slipping off to bed Biggles left silently all be it not in a straight line. 10 mins later he returned shouting abuse at Kevin and covered in blood. It transpired that he had gone to bed and was woken by the loud music. In attempting to turn it off he fell into the wall and split his head and cut his arm. The fact that for once in history Kevin was not guilty, as he had never left the braai, did not deter Biggles from shouting lots of French expletive sounding words for the next few hours.
After a few hours sleep the party moved on to Cape Town. The next drama was Mick's puncture 3km out and we then found out that he did not have the correct wheel brace, the local police were very helpful but the car was abandoned until Monday. Needless to say we were all late for the final game at Milnerton, where we were joined by a few more Bucc's.
The final battle for the championship began with everyone conceding inevitable defeat to Biggles with his six point lead, however by halfway he had been hauled in by three players as he had only scored 2 points and Jenks was on a mission having already scored 12, the battle when down to the last hole with Jenks emerging a very worthy winner on 105 points, Mark Dawson 2nd on 103, Biggles a despondent 3rd on 99, Oh! and it was now all about "taking part" again. Mick finished 4th on 97.
The highest scoring tour in 23 years. Well done all!
Roger Young has advised that he leaves on 23rd February 2008 on a 3 month tour of duty to St Helena Island in the role of Chief Dental Officer.
The island has a 9 hole golf course and he has extended an invitation to the Buccaneers to bring a golf tour over.
However on learning of the 6 day boat trip just to get to the island...we politely declined !
International Sevens Rugby George - 7th -8th December
Thursday 6th December saw a motley bunch of Buccaneers slowly arrive at George tourism resort at various times during day in anticipation of a weekend of braaing and drinking and oh a little bit of rugby.
Biggles with Dennis Measday in tow arrived late in the afternoon and they proceeded into town to have a couple of drinks and get some beers for the braai. They arrived back with a very excited Biggles raving about the cost of beers in George. You can see something coming..can't you !....Yes, he proudly hauled his case of Bavaria beer out the boot of his car and packed it in his fridge and then popped the cap on his first beer !...AAAArgh says he spitting the beer out....this tastes like piss ! And then he reads the label...."Non Alcoholic beer !" And he's got a whole case of the stuff !!!!
Friday morning and nothing changes..Biggles wakes up and makes cup of tea. "AAAArgh again is all you hear and the tea comes spraying out....the plonkers gone and helped himself to salt instead of sugar ! Casualties today were Mark Dawson who invited everyone for a braai at his chalet last night and was snoring very loudly the whole time we were there. Dennis Measday had to leave the grounds early..having had a touch too much of the African sun !
Darts Championship 28th November 2007
The Annual Buccaneers darts Championship held at Hamiltons Club attracted a fair turnout of over 30 players. Martin Beech eased passed a stubborn Kevin Griffin in the final to claim the "Big Trophy"
Old Buccaneer in Town
Dennis Measday arrived back in Cape Town on Friday night 2nd November and his homing instincts kicked in straight away , heading direct to Hamiltons with luggage and Biggles in tow !He's here for a while. Give Biggles a call if you want to contact him.
The Annual Golf Championship with the "Big trophy which looks really nice" at stake, was held on Saturday 6th October 2007 at Langebaan golf Club. A small field with supporters braved the wintry weather and a ridiculously early start of 7.30am.
Amid driving rain and gusting winds our intrepid golfers, dressed up for the occasion in the latest golfing attire, approached the first tee. Now there always has to be one, doesn't there.....and it always has to be Kevin Grffin....don't know if he thought he was making a fashion statement but he impressed some locals ,and scared most, dressed in his new "dragged through the bushes backwards" look...who knows ....maybe this will be the new fashion at Langebaan next season !!
After finally getting the umpteenth ball onto the green and down the hole at the 4th hole, Greg Cooper was understandably just a tad unhappy, having lost count of the number balls he had already lost into the rough. He turned round to Dion Watson and snapped " What the hell is the use of me hitting the ball if I'm going to lose it", Dion Watson gave him a sympathetic yet mischievous look and explained with a wry grin on his face that indeed he first had to hit the ball before it could be lost !
A sprightly John Hulse showed the rest of the field a clean pair of heels and lifted the trophy with a score of 41. The score of 41 incidentally is a higher score ever made by our cricket side....in both innings !
Steve Jenkins surprised everyone by coming in second. What was more surprising however was that actually arrived on time !
Mark Dawson sneaked in the top 3 taking 3rd place and Chris Cowley came in 4th.
See photos under "Pictures"on this site.
A very special once off offer whilst stocks last. A boxset consisting of 3 mint condition Anniversary editions of the Plank magazine for the unbelievable low donation of R250.00 to the Buccs.

The annual Buccaneers Chrsitmas party in June took place at the Hamiltons clubhouse on Saturday 23rd June 2007.
The fantastic turnout to the event ensured that we had a great party. Typical Xmas fare in the form of Turkey and Gammon was supplied in generous proportions by Ardie.
The DJ ensured that the dance floor was occupied at all times and even Biggles could be seen swinging his bionic hip , albeit whilst sitting on a chair !
Thanks must go to those that organised the event, for startes to Biggles and Ardie and then to Dave Morgan and everyone else who became involved to ensure the party was once again a success.
With the Buccs traditional ‘’Christmas in Winter ’’ dinner fast approaching (23rd June at Hammies) our brave social climber / secretary flying ace Biggles is finally having to meet defeat ( de hip actually !) by succumbing to an operation for a hip replacement and there by joining the ‘’ hip
– hop’’club. With at least Peter Blakey and Kevin Tucker hip
– hoppers this makes an entire front row. This must mean something – better scrums for one thing !?The day of the big cut is Friday 8th and all donations are welcome in view of Biggles new improved Zimmer frame (will allow Biggles to continue standing up whilst drinking and thus convince Mary he’s been a good boy!)
Iron man Ransome expects to be up and mobile within days and we fully expect him to take up his post as social secretary collecting cash for all the tickets he’s lumbered the rest of us with.
Once again the Buccaneers took to the field to commemorate the memory of the former President and Catain , Malcolm Prosser.
This year , on the 27th may, the Buccs, with a few Hammies lending a hand, took on the touring club barnes, from the south bank of the Thames.
The day started badly at the Vincent Pallotti Hospital with the death of popular Buccaneer, Jack Chandler who had been fighting cancer for a couple of years. Two minutes silence preceded the match in a sign of respect for both him and Malcolm.
As for the game itself, it was an end to end match played in a wonderful spirit. Even a little over-zealous refereeing by the Barnes official (who had only just taken over from the impeccable totally unbiased Steve Jenkins) could not detract from the thrilling encounter which Barnes won by approximately 9 tries to 6.
After the match there were the customary awards and appropriate down-downs. Lorna, Malcolms widow, presented Biggles with an award for the effort he had put in , putting the whole thing together. There was a sumptuous spread provided by Ardi who now runs the restaurant at Hammies and much beer was consumed before the Cape Towners leopard-crawled to there cars and the Barnes contingent trugdged off across the common to their rooms at the Ritz hotel in Sea Point.
